Obama Taps Justice Hughes for SIxth Circuit

by Jonathan H. Adler

Continuing his string of recent judicial appointments, yesterday President Obama nominated Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Lisabeth Tabor Hughes to an open seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. According to early news reports, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that he does not expect the Senate to consider the nomination. According to a statement from McConnell’s spokesman, “Leader McConnell tried to work with the White House to fill this vacancy, including submitting a qualified Kentuckian for consideration. Rather than work with him to fill this vacancy, they submitted Justice Hughes without even notifying Leader McConnell. He will not support action on this nomination.”
